05 g35X w/ 59,000mi
Title says it all. When I accelerate aggressively there is this clanking sound. I can not target where it is coming from exactly. Has anyone encountered this as well? thanks |

Is it engine knock? Are you using premium fuel?

Not using premium, my wife is the primary driver. I have tried to get her to use premium but she just will not budge,,,even when I tell her that it is better for the car and the gas mileage.

Does it sound like engine knock? Where does the sound come from?
Although my G sedan says premium fuel is not required, it is a necessity with my car. Otherwise, there is engine knock.

I will be honest with you,,,dont know what exactly engine knock sounds like,,but it is coming from the engine when I accelerate so therefore it very well could be engine knock..
Could you please explain this in detail for me? What is engine knock? and does it have anything to do with using regular gas? I really appreciate the help |

Engine knock, or detonation or pre-ignition, isn't a good thing and can be caused by using fuel with too low of an octane rating. Fill the tank with the highest octane fuel at your gas station and see if the noise goes away. If so, you're going to have to convince your wife to use premium.
The engine has a knock sensor, which will retard timing and reduce performance if knock is detected. Here's more info on engine knock. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_knock

Wow that sounds bad. I will start demanding premium fuel. In the mean time I will try and pinpoint where the sound is acutally coming from and at what point the sound is triggered.
Do you think a service tech at an infiniti dealer would take a ride with me even if the car is out of warranty?? I will keep this post up to date. Thanks for all the helpful info. |

Another metaphor is 'nickles in a tin can' sound. Prolonged pinging/detonation will slowly beat your VQ to death.

Try premium fuel and see if that helps.

I have a 05 mt, the engine is high output and the owners manual indicate "required" fuel is premium. My neighbor has your car and he was using 87 octane (lowest grade) and he had to take the car into the dealership (under warranty) 2 times as the engine light came on. The dealership told him that he should be using premium fuel. They also told him that he he want to use a lower grade of gas that he could use the mid grade but every out fill up he should be using premium fuel.
I also had engine knock I my car and was using premium fuel. The mechanic at the dealership advised me to switch brands of fuel. I am now using Shell with nitrogen. He explained that this gas cleans my pistons. Engine knock is now gone. Lastly, the mechanic also advised me that these cars are notorious for some engine knock. Hopefully this helps a bit.
