Wife's friend has an 02 G20 with a pretty badly torn drivers side CV Boot, I was looking at the service manual and it looks like its a pain in the ass to change just the boot. My question is since it already has close to 100,000 on it, should I just slap a whole new CV axle in there? Appreciate any advice yall can give me.

Yes, but try getting an aftermarket or rebuilt one. The aftermarket axles are very inexpensive, compared with the factory one, you may be able to get one for under $100.

So I was able to get a brand new CV Axle from advanced for $70, there was quite a range in priced when I called around to the local parts stores. The most expensive being carquest who wanted $140. After spending the better part of yesterday attempting to remove the axle however I came to the conclusion I did not possess the tools or skill necessary to complete this job. As some of you may know on these cars to remove the drivers side cv axle, you also must remove the passenger side in order to stick a screwdriver inside the axle housing to knock the drivers side out (I am not even bullshitting as crazy as that sounds it came right out of the service manual) This is how far I got, stuck the screwdriver in where the manual said, whacked it as hard as I could, but to no avail the axle didn't pop out. So I did the mechanics walk of shame and had to call the midas down the road to bring the car in today to fix it. I did find out however that the passenger side is also bad so since they have to take it off to get the drivers side out I am just going to have them slap a new one on that side as well.
Now here is a question to anyone who works in the shop(s) the guy at midas said the book rate for the drivers side is 2.4 hrs, and the passenger side is 1.5 hrs, since they have to remove the passenger to get to the driver I am assuming that is where that extra 1.1 hrs comes from. Does the shop have the right to charge me a total of 3.9 hrs, or should they only charge me the 2.4? I believe it would be double dipping if they charged me the 3.9, but I don't know the rules when it comes to this stuff. I appreciate any advice you guys can offer, I don't mind paying for the work, but I don't want to be taken advantage of either. |

Wow! That's very expensive, we just charge 1 hr. for each side.
I think I should start charging more at my shop. Quote:

Apparently I need a larger pry-bar, if you read the service manual it makes it sound like in order to get it out you have to take the passenger side out, that's why I did it that way

Well, speaking from experience ("BOOK TIME") and actual time is different. IE is charging for his time (actual) and the book is giving more. So, your caught in the middle.

To replace the Cv boots, regardless from left or right, I did not have to remove the driveshafts from their housings. Just using a big F clamp, to clamp the shaft to the lower control arm ( you have to use a piece of 4 by 4 between shaft and lower control arm, and make sure the portion of the shaft from the clamp position to the inward is really tight.)
After the hub and drive shaft are already separated and with the F clamp is on the position above. Using a brass chisel to strike right on the outer race of the outer axe shaft. The outer axe will come off, OK now just remove the old boot and put the new one on while the whole axe is still on the vehicle!! Well.... there is a little small room to play with ,but it saves you a lot of time and labor to tacke the job. I did too many vehicles like this without removing the axe from vehicle. |
