Hi All - in trying to get quotes to either rebuild my transmission (5 spd auto) I OR to install a 'new' remanufactured one, I have gotten some conflicting info.
1. Can anyone speak to pros and cons of rebuilding the existing or installing one that has been remanufactured? Dealership says that the torque converter died and fed metal shavings to the transmission. 2. What do you know about this possibly causing there to be metal shavings in the coolant? I jsut spoke with a guy who does transmission work and he mentioned that the radiator cools the trans fluid, and that there may be a separate transm fluid cooler in the car. He said that either way, I need to make sure that there are no metal shavings in the coolant or it'll feed it back into the new fluid/transmission during cooling. How do I know if my car has a separate transmission cooler? Need some advise, as I can't afford the $4400 pricetag for the dealer to replace the tranny and torque converter, but want to be sure to make an educated decision so that I get the max life out of the car. Thanks in advance!! |

Well, your in the right place....I'll address your questions...As for metal in the transmission fluid (not the coolant) yee, as the torque converter comes apart it leaves tons on metal behind. So proper flushing is most important this involves running fluid through the cooling lines ...once that's done it a good idea to have an inline filter to make sure no little particles are left that could cause a problem once the works done.
Rebuilding by a" qualified " builder can save a ton of $$ but not all builders are the same. I'd suggest you ck on the shop before you jump in. Now abut a transmission cooler....Most cars have on either in the radiator or a separate unit. Not too sure about your 2003. I'd say it's probably internal if I have to guess. BTW where do you live?

Thanks for the info - so it sounds like as long as the coolant system is flushed really well, and a filter installed to catch any metal particles that may remain, I should be OK reagrding 'reinfection' :) of the "new" tranny....
I got a quote to have a remanufactured unit installed for 3k, with a 1 year warrenty on all parts and labor from my local mechanic. I got a quote to rebuild the existing transmission from a local transm shop for $2500, which was a little less but I'm now getting negative feedback from folks on that particular shop. So it doesn't seem like it's really worth saving the $500. I'm located in Massachusettes. |

The tranny cooler is integrated into the bottom of the radiator.
