Default k&n air filter

Is it worth it? Does anyone use one? Any changes in mileage? Thanks Chuck

A lot of people used the K&N filter in the stock box.

I think Amsoil has a reusable dry filter that may work better because there is no oil to get on the MAF sensor.

Somewhere along the way a participant on this forum suggested that Nissan/Infiniti will not warranty otherwise covered MAF sensors if the car has a K&N or similar air filter installed. I've experienced MAF issues on other cars after installing K&N filters, although in those cases I was able to regain full MAF performance after carefully cleaning the MAF. I should also note that all these other cases were after I had cleaned and re-oiled (presumably with too much oil) the filters. I should also mention that I did not notice significant performance gains due to the filter. The difference in flow is so far into the rev band that you probably would have a hard time getting much gain. With an open element system though, you will notice a change in the sound. My purchase of this type of filter was for longevity rather than performance.

I use a K&N and have noticed the revs diving and surging once in awhile at idle. I've had it in the car since Thanksgiving and didn't notice this happening before. It could be that the MAF is oily/dirty now from the filter, it's at the dealership soaking up warranty work right now so I'll update the thread when I get the car back.

fujita makess some dry filter ones. these mafs are pretty sensative and cost alot too, so your best bet is to get a dry flow filter wether its an amsoil or one from fujita or other brand if u find(i got an aem dryflow reusable filter)

So I have K&N air filter for my 06 4cyl Camry SE. I have been using it for awhile probably 8-10 months. I also own 08 G35xS. I am thinking to put K & N filter to replace the OEM. I notice 08 version needs two. But reading the this forum, it seemed like it might get MAF dirty. What is MAF? I know the K&N filter uses oil. How does it damage the MAF?

MAF stands for Mass Air Flow, and it is a sensor that is between the air filter and the throttle plate. The MAF sensor measures the amount of air flowing in to the throttle plate and the computer uses the air flow information (along with other sensor data) for fuel mapping, etc. One wire of the MAF sensor has a constant current flowing through it and heats up. As air flows past it, the element cools causing a varying voltage based on the amount of cooling due to air. There is also a second non-heated sensor element. The computer also knows the incoming air temperature from the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor so it can use the three values to calculate the amount of air flowing into the intake.

The oil from the K&N filter can attach to the MAF sensor elements causing them to read erroneously which in turn causes the air/fuel ratio to be off. From my limited experience, this typically results in a rich condition and a drop in fuel economy.

If you over-charge cotton filter with oil, that's when it can get on MAF.
