OK. Here is my plan. I will use my cherry picker to raise the engine enough to remove the oil pan and replace the bearings. I hope I can tell which one is causing the noise, but i don't want the crank or journals to be in bad shape. I do not think I will be able to remove the entire crankshaft. I have never attempted this type of repair before. In the past if I had to go crankshaft deep, I took the engine apart, at least had the crank polished, at least honed the cylinders re-ringed and an oil pump.

Any advice would be welcome....

The knock sensor does not make noise, it just senses the knock and sends the signal to the engine control module (ECM).

If the problem is on the J30, it is possible that the one of the main bearing is worn out. Have you had the drive belts replaced or adjust lately? Over-tight drive belts can cause a premature main bearing worn out and make noise. The problem is very common on J30.
I hope the main bering is worn out. That would probably be the easiest fix, if I can get to it. As far as the drive belts go the car had the knock when i got it, so I don't know. Payed very little for it and need t fix it for cheap.

Default Shade tree over my head - knock knock whos there..

She runs again.(fuel pump went bad from sitting to long i guess) The knock is still there, no worse than before. It has got to be a main bearing. I would like to work on it just outside the basement, roll my cherry picker out there (i think ill need it) raise the car so i can get under it and remove the oil pan....and any thing that is in the way of it's removal. I had a best friend once that worked for J-- B--- Nisan. I should call him and offer all the beer he can drink just to hand me tools and give advice when necessary.

I have never replaced crank parts on a motor that wasn't on an engine stand. If I wasn't so intimidated I'd pull the motor and trans as a unit and have all the room I need to recondition the engine.

If anyone has any advice or something to look out for from your experience feel free to jump in. -- I have never replaced a main bearing without removing the crank. -- I will fix it or ---- it up.

So I am back from a weekend outing and I'm glad to see that you've got it all sorted out kgrant. thanks for the update on the thread. It will help others.

Edit: After reading the next page of solo posts it seems your thread may help a fair few with a few different problems.

Thanks FX luv...i should have done a better write up with more pictures on the fuel pump replacement. It's a simple do-it-yourself job that could save a few guys some money. It was a lucky guess on my part as far as the Maxima fuel pump goes, and when the guy at Napa said they use the same pump I made a b-line for the pull-a-part yard. -- Now I don't always recommend using junk yard parts on a nice automobile, but I stated earlier I paid very little for this car and until the knock is fixed it's basically worth nothing.

As far as junk yard parts go Best set of tires and wheels for cheap I ever got were from a junk yard. People wreck new cars all the time, so don't laugh. I used to have a friend that owned a junkyard that would let me look for stuff i could use. --uh he went out of business.

Default Workin on the crankshaft....if i can get to it.

O.K. got a new plan. After looking things over and completing a little work I have decided to drop the front suspension as a unit so I will have more room to work on the underside of my engine. If all I had to do was remove the oil pan and replace it I may go by the book, but I need room to work. What's the use in having tools and such if you don't get the maximum out of them.

Here are a few pictures to give you a better idea of what I have in mind....

I will try to drop the front suspension so I will have all the room Necessary to complete the job...which is to replace a knocking bearing. Rod or main..i cant tell just by the sound. I've went back and forth on which it is...I bought this car from a junk yard with the knock so no info from previous owner.

The wooden 4x4 and jack are in place to hold the front suspension up as I take loose all the bolts and such that hold it to the frame. The jack stands further back are under the frame holding the front end up.

Here is a rear nut that supports the front suspension to the frame. The other two nuts already off are just 'part of the whole'

Here you can see the front suspension separating from the frame as the nut is loosened.

I'm in no hurry, I've had this car for ever. It was sorta like, "get it outta here NOW"..... women. Wacha gonna do?

Default Rod or Main?

One day I'll get inside to find out. Anyway pictures are more fun to look at........

paint added to remember original location of adjustment.

Yep, there's where the work is at. Should be a guy under there working. It won't

fix itself.

passenger side wheel well showing front suspension coming loose from the frame.

that nut was tight!

Great project kgrant. It's like an old serial thriller. I can't wait for the next installment.
