I never noticed this before, is this normal?
2006 G35X. Car is in park and running. I step on brake pedal and with each press on the brake pedal I am getting a clicking noise in the shifter. Doesn't do it when car is shut off or when the car is in drive or any other gear mode. What is this? Thanks. Last edited by catsnmusic; 10-21-2009 at 09:37 PM. |

That's probably the shift interlock. There's a solenoid in there that prevents the car from being able to shift out of park without also having a foot on the brake pedal. This is a safety feature to keep kids from inadvertently knocking the car out of park when irresponsible parents leave their kids (or dogs) in the car with the car running while they run a quick errand.

When I dropped my car off this morning for the rattling window and center console squeaks, I asked about the shifter/brake pedal noise. The service tech said it's the auto brake adjustment making that noise.

shorod is right, the service tech is wrong. My sedan makes that noise occasionally.

I think you guys are right. The service person isn't really a tech. SHE is a service rep so I think she was just guessing.

With 4 wheel disc brakes, the "auto" adjustment is natural through the brake calipers. Some also self adjust when the parking brake is used, but I think our G35's use a brake drum setup for the parking brake and disc brake system for the "normal" braking.
