Hey everyone,
after expereincing a little engine knock from using low grade for a year I asked everyone about it on this forum and they were very helpful. Since then I have filled up with either BP or Shell premium, highest AKI of 93-94. I was wondering about octane boosters. I know that they are mainly for racing performance but it seems to me that you get overall better performance from whatever grade of gas that you put in your car. Im not saying I would go back to low grade but Im thinking of adding it to my full premium tank. I have done some research and it seems that the most potent, highest concentrated octane booster that will significantly raise the octane levels in one full tank of gas is Lucas Fuel Additive/Octane Booster. Here is a link to the reviews of different boosters: http://volvospeed.com/Reviews/octane...ers_lucas.html Let me know what you think, and/or recommendations. Do you add anything to each tank?? If you do, what? I am just another guy trying to get the best out of my 05 g35x, it is our only car and our first major purchase so I really want to preserve it as long as I can. Thanks everyone! kschlich |

I would encourage you to buy premium fuel from a major and skip any and all fuel additives.

My experience in car dealerships (behind the counter) is that BG 44K and Techron concentrate (from a Chevron/Texaco station or ANY auto parts store) are the only two that really work. In many cases they have done near miracles on cars with a list of different issues. I know many experiences techs who run a can of one of these through a tank once every 30-45k miles, use good gasoline and NEVER have problems. Not an advertisement, I promise, just experience for an easy way to start working on many fuel system issues.

That is what I picked up yesterday,, a Chevron Techron concentrate that treats up to 20 gallons. We are going on about a 300 mile road trip in the morning so I will be filling up with Shell Premium and adding this to the tank so it will clean all the way through.
Thanks everyone. Does anyone else add anything else other than this to their engines to promote longevity and performance? What about Oil Additives?? |

Oil additives are NOT recommended as your QUALITY motor oil has all the additives it needs. Stick to those and change every 5000 mi.

With that oct rating available, imo you don't need oct booster if no more pinging is happening.

i agree i dont like to use additives espesially the oil ones. people always mess it up and add the regular amounft of oil and then the additives...really gets things messed up. the only additive i use is techron fuel system cleaner but if u are getting shell or chevron they have additives added so u dpnt really need to spend extra for the fuel system cleaner. i havent messed with octane booster but as long as you get the right fuel grade you should be good. i think it says to use 91 or better at least mine does

I agree with everyone here. No gas additives and no oil additives, with one exception, use a good synthetic oil (Mobil 1, Amsol, etc) and change oil at no less than 5k (with the filter). With synthetic oil you may be able to go 7.5k between changes.

If you are already using a good quality fuel you likely don't need any kind of fuel additive. I am a firm believer in Chevron/Texaco gasoline with Techron already in the fuel. Using a good quality/respected brand of synthetic oil coupled with regular changes should eliminate any need of using any kind of oil additive.
