I'm just curious. When I bought my Q, sadly the previous owner had neglected the alignment. It was way off, but after a quick trip to the tire store, I corrected this. Obviously though, depending on how long it had been this way, my tires were worn funny. So I expect some sort of low vibration at high speeds...which I get. I notice though also with the hard...small pot holes are speed pumps sound terrible loud...and was also wondering if the front struts could be worn out.
What is the recommend mileage for this replacement? Second and more important question, whats everyone opinion on how long they gotten good ride out of a pair of struts? I can believe this answer can vary greatly. Its not a bad ride by any means...so I'm in no hurry to replace them...but just curious in case I get a free weekend in the near future. |

u can do a bounce test, i believe when u push on one side or the side u think the sound coomes from, and it should only bounce 2 times and level if its more than 2 then u might have something wrong. u can visually inspect it for any leaks, could be a worn busshing or some other suspension problem. and i believe u have coil springs

Yeah, to test the quality of your struts, go around and press on each corner of your car. The car should only bouce 1 TIME for good struts. Anymore than that, you should look into replacing them if you want optimum performance. Also keep in mind that infiniti's are sports sedans/suv's. That being said, it does have a rather stiff ride for handling purposes. It won't ride like a lexus/mercedes will, cushioning the bumps and wiping your butt for you at the same time. However, i'm sure you're well aware by now. A good mileage marker for strut replacement is 90-100k miles. With Nissan/Toyota/Honda they usually last on the upper part of 90K. Just better quality OE struts.

I have a 1999 Q45 with 75,000+ miles, and the ride is starting to deteriorate. No dealer or mechanic can give me a firm rule on this subject. My father has owned two Q45's, and he replaced struts at 73,000 and 77,000. Road conditions are a factor, and so is poor handling. My Q also experienced the vibration you noted. I have replaced the tie rods and the steering arms. The tie rods were worn, and the rubber gaskets cracked and were leaking.
I plan to service the struts between 75,000 and 90,000 miles, or sooner if handling or safety require. |

yeah I'm going to jack the whole car up this weekend. I believe last I looked one of the tie-rod bushings boot was cracked...so I'll start there to see if the bushing its self has taken in dirt wearing it.

Ride & handling seem fine, but sharp noise in front when I hit a bump (no bounce). Mechanic says front struts probably need replacing but only available from dealer for about $800 each. Does that sound right? Any other source?

Yeah. Unfortunately those are hydraulic assisted struts i believe. I double checked KYB catalog and they don't have a part # for that generation Q45. So yeah, dealer only i believe so you have to be at their mercy on their prices. You can search around different dealers in your area to find the best price. Sometimes they will vary from dealer to dealer. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

cool, its finally supposed to be up in the 60s here this weekend. So I'm going to several maintenance items, I'll look at them in more detail when I get the car lifted up. Engine/electrical have always been my strong points, although I'm no super mechanic. suspension though is definitely one of my weakest...simply because I've not done a whole lot of work in that area. When you can the replace the strut or shock on an old VW or Porsche for about $25...who worries about diagnosing it, right?
worst case, I'll take some pictures of any areas that might look problematic, and see what you guys think...if any exist |
