I own a 2008 Infiniti QX56 , bought new a year ago, and today received notice of the need to update the navigation system. It seemed to be a promo between Infiniti and Navteq with a discounted price of $149.00 versus the regular price of $190.00. Final note was that the upgrade , after purchase , must be installed by an Infiniti dealer. Is that necessary, has anyone had it done before and what is the usual cost for the install?
Thanks,, Benbo |

I think for your model it's got a hard drive that needs unput. As far as "needing" the update it depends on how much you need the current system to have new roads and points of interest. These are the only things that get updated as far as I know. If the system works fine for what you use it for save your money.
$150 seems like a pretty good price for the update but you should contact Infiniti for installation pricing. I'd bet they're going to want to charge you in the order of $100.

I’ve been pondering a navigation update for my 2007 G35X for a while now. You know the enthusiast in me says do it and the practical side says what’s the cost/use factor.
It’s been a tug of war. So when Navteq ran the price lowering promo of course it peeked my interest. It went from $190.99 to $149.99 so I sez.. well how much could the dealer ask for the service seeing as I’ve already paid $149.99 for just a “Code”. Well guess what guys….they want $165.00 for the service. That comes out to $315.00 for a “GPS Update”. As much as I’d like to see my G stay fresh I have to bow to the absurdity of it all. At these prices not even considering the price of the navigation option itself I’m afraid G will not see any updates until somebody looks at this process and say “Hey this doesn’t make sense”. By the way my friend has an ES350 and his GPS updates are covered with his extended warranty which I have for my G. So looks like Lexus looked at this process and came to a different conclusion. I have a 2007 QX56 and got the lastest dvd from NAVTEQ for my navi system - popped in the DVD and voila. I see updated streets, icons, and driving direction screens. I did not do anything special to "install" nor did anyone at the dealer.

The NAVTEQ upgrade is usually just for the maps, but sometimes there are software upgrades and that's why you have to have the dealer check it out.
